Top Designer Dog Breeds

Designer Dog - GoldendoodleDesigner dogs are becoming more popular these days. When two purebred dogs are deliberately bred together, the offspring results in what is called a “designer” dog. These designer dogs are special, not just because of the adorable look they possess, but also because of the special characteristics they have. When two distinct types of purebred dogs are bred together, the characteristics they have can be a combination of the characteristics that either breed possesses. These designer dogs also carry special price tags due to their special characteristics.

In most cases, the main reasons for creating designer dogs are to give them a new look, make them healthier, make them possess a higher intellect or temperament; or make them have a mixture of all these characteristics. In some cases, this actually happens, making it an all-round success. But with the knowledge of genetics, it is known that there is no guarantee that this can happen, and no one should expect an entirely perfect offspring. In fact, the offspring may not pick the best characteristics of both parents, but the worst.

Designer Dog - Maltipoo

Designer dogs have been in existence for a very long time. Before the act of deliberately breeding two purebred dogs together started, there used to be some designer dogs which occurred free of any intervention from man. In other words, these were results produced from dogs that were permitted to roam freely and mate willingly. It was from this act that names such as mongrel, crossbred, mutt, etc. were given. These were the names that these dogs were called before ‘’designer’’ dog as a term, was coined. However, the history of designer dogs could date back to as far as when man initially started to interact with wolves. But some people argue that they are of a more recent origin.

The interesting parts of the designer dogs do not end at the production of the dogs. Another interesting part is the naming of the dog. In some cases, a designer dog could be described using more than one name. The Mal-Shi, for example, is cross between two dogs- a Maltese and a Shih Tzu. However, there are several other names that are used in describing it which are, Malti Tzu, Shima, Shih-tese, and Shihtese. There are some dogs whose names are not difficult to figure out. An example is the Yorkie Tzu, which obviously is a combination of a Yorkshire Terrier and Shih Tzu. Other dogs do not have names that are easy to figure out. An example is the Whoodle, which is a combination of a wheaten terrier and a poodle.
