Over the past couple weeks there have been stories written on a new startup called “Screening Room”. This company is backed by the founder of Napster, and Sean Parker of Facebook. These two tech moguls are developing a service that will allow you to watch movies at home the same day that they are released in theaters.
There has been some pushback against this idea from the large Theater companies such as AMC, as this is definitely a threat to their business. The estimated charge of renting a new release movie on Screening Room is roughly $50. This seems pricy, but if you bring a date to the movies it is likely you spend this much or more on popcorn and tickets. Will there be a Netflix of movie theaters or will this idea be shot down before it can fly?
