Dave Matthews and his fellow band mates have set a high bar for live music these days. Their sound is incredibly authentic, but their ability to reproduce it in a live setting while further enhancing it is what sets them apart from the herd. Songs like “Crush” and “#41” include jams that can carry on for 10 minutes and beyond, but the band never loses focus of the main idea and it allows for each member to put his skills on display for the audience.
Dave Matthews’ eccentric personality is unmistakably the center of the act. He struts, jerks, strums, and screams across the stage, and never misses a beat. It is a sight to behold, one that has to be seen in person to truly appreciate.
It is not uncommon for conservative fans to become full blown die-hards after their first experience; repeat offenders are the norm. Dave Matthews Band is very obviously influenced by 70’s jam band pioneers like The Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band (among many other bands and genres), but they also have a contemporary sensibility for catchy, witty lyricism, and this concoction brings young and old in droves to their live shows.
The Dave Matthews Band Summer Tour 2016 kicks off in Charlottesville, Virginia on May 7th, and I wouldn’t miss it if I were you.
